The real danger of running green lights...
Last night as I was riding home from the board meeting a van with 3 or 4 young guys in it came blasting through a red light and nearly hit me. I had a solid green light which was near the end of it's cycle and they had a solid red light, not in the process of changing from yellow to red or anything. They didn't stop, and when they were about two feet from me, two of them leaned out the window and said, "Faggot!" then they all started laughing hysterically and they sped off. My guess is they were drunk, or just young and foolish, but I preferr to think normal human beings wouldn't act in such an ugly way unless they were under the influence of a mind-altering substance. Just a half a block later there was a cop car facing the other direction, pulled over with it's lights flashing, writing a ticket for another driver.
Being all flustered from my near-death experience, I rode up to the policeman and apologized for interrupting him and I reported the incident. He said he would radio it to his accociates. About five minutes later as I was nearing the top of the hill, the policeman I talked to came zooming past me and turned right at the top of the hill. I can only hope that they found and stopped the young guys that ran the red light. Now I see one of the real dangers of running red lights is who will get hurt by it. Cars are bigger. Even though I have a green light, I can't trust car drivers to keep me safe. Most car drivers are perfectly easy to get along with, but it seems there is always one with a bad attitude. I'm glad I'm alive today.
